It is, however, a satisfying pay-off novel for avid readers and fans. This is a gallery of interior art for Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. For more information about each piece, including transcripts of the text (when needed), check each file's individual page.

Love at first sight

The front half of the story drags along as Yumi and Painter alternate lives and try to understand one another. It’s the book equivalent of the “Spider-man pointing at himself” meme. The back half, when the mystery starts to come together, is where Sanderson characteristically kicks things into high gear.

They proceed to the place of ritual to begin their daily practice. Nikaro and Yumi talk along the way about the apparent hion lines she witnessed in the tent, and Painter thinks this suggests they are on the verge of an industrial revolution. There are fewer onlookers than usual because the scholars' machine has been activated.

One at a time they leave the spring to get dressed, and as Painter is being dressed, he faints. Eventually it moved on to utilizing the spirits, and produced hion buds near former settlements--locations where hion lines emerged from the ground. Only the refugees living on the outskirts of Torio survived to resettle the region over the centuries that followed.

And yes, first-time readers of Brandon Sanderson or Cosmere will miss out on understanding the Cosmere terminologies and who Design is if they start here. But honestly, if the reader hasn’t read The Stormlight Archive yet, none of these actually count as spoilers. A relatively very minor spoiler, too, if we count some things I can’t say here. I’m caught up with all the Cosmere books, and the knowledge I had from reading The Stormlight Archive did not significantly enhance my reading experience of this one. Some readers will and have argued you must read up to Rhythm of War before reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. I understand the sentiment, but this is a bit crazy.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter: A Cosmere Novel

The resulting story ranges from comedic and heartwarming, to sentimental and even somber. While the characters begin untangling the mystery’s threads, they are drawn closer to each other, and the question of how their story will resolve looms ever larger. Back at the Noodle Pupil, Yumi drinks broth to warm herself as the others comfort her. Nikaro feels worn out, after being drained by the nightmare and helping heal Yumi.

Get Started

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter is a fantasy novel written by American author Brandon Sanderson. It is part of the Cosmere fictional universe and the third book of Sanderson's "Secret Projects" Kickstarter campaign. It was exclusively released on July 1, 2023, by Dragonsteel Entertainment to Kickstarter backers. Painter stands alone at the western edge of Kilahito, waiting for the nightmares. He considers what Yumi would do, and realizes he has another option.

The worldbuilding grows more detailed than this—and I’m doing my best to avoid spoilers, so I’ll not go into specifics—as the plot thickens. It works well, and I found it interesting, but I do suspect that readers unfamiliar with Sanderson’s other work may lose track. Now, all alone and with no one he knew left alive, he chances across humans among the concrete wilderness. No, these are stone-age like tribespeople—three women whose tribe has been slaughtered by a Great Beast. One who can harness the power of the crystals and its magic-giving mists. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings.

Great first book

As I said, compromise and empathy are some of the main themes in Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. Also, if I’m not mistaken, the name Yumi is most likely inspired by Yuna in Final Fantasy X video game. Tidus, the other main character in Final Fantasy X, is a blitzball player. This is practically where Final Fantasy X came in as an inspiration for this novel.

Yumi gets an impression that even if they survive the initial attack, the machine will continue sending nightmares until Kilahito is rubble. She exits the exhibit hall and enters the courtyard full of rubble, then begins to stack--letting loose with all of her skill. Back in Kilahito, six painters have now been wounded, and Tojin shouts that they cannot hold. The painters are running out of canvas and the ground is slick with paint. Nikaro urges them to continue because the city depends on them, and the battle cry "we are the Dreamwatch now" catches on. Nikaro then recognizes Liyun among the nightmares and gets an idea.

Yumi asks several questions via Nikaro, and Liyun admits the truth--though she believes Yumi's rebellion will be short-lived. They float together and Yumi tries to touch his hand, but once again is unable to make physical contact. After this she declares that she wants to do something "transgressive". Painter proposes to spy on the scholars and their machine, which is more serious than Yumi had imagined--but she considers and agrees. Nikaro and Yumi join Design in cleaning up the spilled soup so that they can talk briefly in private.

Yumi tries on a bra for the first time, followed by the blue dress. She is concerned that her shoulders are bare, but Akane included an additional cardigan-like top that she can wear. Yumi is enamored with the dress, and decides that she is comfortable having possessions that she likes.

Although some readers have felt dissatisfied with Sanderson’s prose, I always love his writing and storytelling style. His writing is vivid, and the scenes are constantly easy to visualize in my mind, with emotionally impactful and hard-hitting passages placed at the right moment. A cooking machine that succeeded at creating a noodle will never top me feeling awed by a chef cooking a delicious noodle for me.

Nikaro tasks her with painting the bamboo stroke one thousand times, and she begins this without question. Eventually there is a knock at the door, and Yumi answers it after Painter gestures. Akane invites Yumi to dinner, and insists she can't stay in the apartment all day. Nikaro has Yumi pretend that she is studying for exams, and Akane leaves.
